Piers Morgan said America would never embrace Steven Retchless. Certainly he wouldn’t.
A male pole dancer is “weird for guys to watch,” the stodgy Brit insisted. “There’s a reason there are no male pole dancing clubs in America.”
So far, Morgan has been forced to eat his words.
24 year-old Retchless – the reigning American Pole Fitness Champion — was one of four acts advancing to the semi-finals on Wednesday night (07/20). Kid dance troupe Silhouettes, motorcycle daredevils Smage Brothers and singer Daniel Joseph Baker also survived the cut.
Judge Sharon Osbourne has been one of Retchless’s biggest supporters on the show.
“It is beautiful what he does,” she said on Tuesday night. “I don’t want people to think it is a stigma to be a guy pole dancer.”
Morgan, however, remains unconvinced.
“It’s nothing against him. I like him personally,” he tells us. “He has only shown good manners and good grace. I just don’t think it is the kind of act that is going to ever work commercially.”
