Two of the best hip hop contortionist dancers went head to head Wednesday night in hopes of earning a coveted ticket to New York.
Alonzo “Turf” Jones (watch his audition) and Tyrese “Stepz” Green (watch his audition) have a rivalry that pre-dates their appearances on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT.
“Me and Turf already know each other from battlin’ in each others states,” Stepz, 22, revealed on the show. “He’s from Cali. I’m from New Jersey-New York. He’s known in Cali for being one of the best and I am known for being the best in New York.”
Turf, 19, agreed: “My main competition right now is my main man Stepz.”
The two young men also share another bond: come from broken homes.
Stepz is from Patterson, New Jersey, grew up living in a gang-infested neighborhood and was raised by his grandmother after getting kicked out of his mother’s house as a kid.
Turf was homeless until recently, resides in San Francisco.
Both dancers gave it their best shot, but in the end, there was only one spot to be had.
“Turf, you break my heart,” judge Howard Stern said. “I want to put you through because I like you. But unfortunately I had to throw my involvement out the window in terms of how I feel about you and just evaluate the talent.
“Here’s our decision, I will give it to you straight. I am gonna send you home. Pack up your bags and get to New York, cause you are going live.”
Props to Stepz, who is now throwing his support behind his West Coast competitor.
“One of us made it,” he said. “I am gonna be with him in spirit and he gonna shut it down. More respect for Turf!”
