It was a night of second chances on AMERICA’S GOT TALENT.
12 acts — all previously eliminated from the competition — returned to show why America and the judges got it wrong.
“The wild card show is all about redemption,” Howie Mandel said. And he was right. Almost all of the performers nailed it.
Among the highlights:
Escape artist Spencer Horsman padlocked himself inside a tank that was slowly filled with wet cement — and managed to free himself in just 90 seconds. “That’s what you gotta do to win,” Howard Stern said. ”You gotta almost kill yourself. had you killed yourself, they would have given you the million dollars.”
Las Vegas magicians Jarrett and Raja somehow suspended a grand piano in the air, made it disappear and reappear in the back of the theater. ”Howie was right to bring you back,” Howard applauded. ”I like big illusions. That is the kind of illusion I would pay to see.”
Animal ventriloquist Todd Oliver hit it out of the park with a side-splittingly funny political comedy sketch, in which his dog Irving was a candidate for President. ”You can vote for the black guy or you can vote for the white guy, but with me, you get both,” he the canine quipped.
10 year-old mariachi singer Sebastien “El Charro de Oro” took a gamble and sang in English. The hometown crowd loved his rendition of “New York, New York,” but Stern thought it exposed some weaknesses in his voice. Young Sebastien may have won voters over for good when he took the microphone from Nick Cannon, looked into the camera, and began to tear up wishing his younger brothers a happy birthday. He missed out on the celebration at home, because he was in New Jersey, preparing for the show.
Goth-opera sensation Andrew DeLeon had no trouble with nerves this time around. The 19 year-old make-up artist brought the house down with an aria that sounded an awful lot like Toni Braxton’s “Unbreak My Heart”. ”You were probably the biggest surprise of the season so far,” Howie told him. ”We didn’t expect that voice and that kind of style coming from you. I think tonight, in this night of redemption, you redeemed yourself.”
Only four of this week’s acts will advance to the semi final rounds. The results of America’s vote will be announce Wednesday night at 9:00 PM EST/PST on NBC.
